Discover more about Phelps Dodge General Office Building

The Phelps Dodge General Office Building, located at the entrance to Brewery Gulch in Bisbee, Arizona, is a significant historical landmark. Constructed in 1895, this red-brick building served as the headquarters for the Phelps Dodge Corporation's copper mining and smelting operations in the area from 1896 to 1961. The building is the only remaining early Phelps Dodge office in the United States. Phelps Dodge played a crucial role in the growth of the American Southwest, and the building symbolizes the company's evolution from a family-owned business to a modern corporation. The building's architecture features a rectangular, gable-roofed main block with two-story octagonal bays flanking the entrance. A one-story wing was added in 1914. After Phelps Dodge ceased operations in Bisbee in 1961, the building was used for county offices and as a post office. In 1971, it was converted into the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, which became the first rural museum to join the Smithsonian Affiliation Program. Today, the museum showcases Bisbee's history, particularly its mining heritage. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the town's founding and growth as a major copper-producing center.
