Camelback Mountain: A Phoenix Icon

Rising 2,704 feet above sea level, Camelback Mountain is a defining feature of the Phoenix skyline. Its name comes from its unique silhouette resembling a kneeling camel. The mountain is located within the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area, nestled between Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley. Camelback Mountain boasts a rich history, serving as a sacred site for the Hohokam people from around 300 to 1450 AD. The Hohokam built extensive canal systems and engaged in farming in the region. A cave on the north side of the mountain indicates that it was used for ceremonial purposes. In the late 19th century, the land was slated as part of a million acre Indian reservation. However, that allocation was later reversed. Efforts to preserve Camelback Mountain began in the early 20th century. Senator Barry Goldwater played a crucial role in securing the higher elevations against development in the 1960s. The area officially became a Phoenix city park in 1968. The mountain is composed of Precambrian granite (approximately 1.5 billion years old) and red sedimentary sandstone. Plant species include saguaro cactus, barrel cactus, palo verde trees, mesquite, and ironwood. Smaller animals like cottontail rabbits, lizards, Harris antelope squirrels, birds, and snakes, including rattlesnakes, can be encountered. Hiking Camelback Mountain is a popular activity for tourists and locals. However, the two main trails, Echo Canyon and Cholla, are rated as extremely difficult. Hikers should be experienced and prepared for steep elevation gains, uneven terrain, and exposure to the elements.
