The Chandler Ostrich Festival is more than just a local event; it's a vibrant celebration of Chandler's unique heritage. Dating back to 1989, the festival pays homage to Dr. A.J. Chandler, who brought the largest ostrich herd to Arizona in the late 19th century. What started as a community event has grown into one of the premier festivals in the Southwest, attracting between 250,000 and 350,000 attendees annually. The festival, held at Tumbleweed Park, offers a diverse range of attractions. Visitors can witness live ostrich races, enjoy national and regional entertainment, explore a carnival midway, and indulge in a variety of food options. The festival also includes arts and crafts vendors and interactive activities suitable for all ages. In recent years, the festival has added new attractions such as stunt shows and aerial performances. The Ostrich Festival is deeply rooted in Chandler's history. In the early 20th century, Chandler was a hub for ostrich ranching, with thousands of ostriches raised for their valuable plumes. The festival serves as a reminder of this colorful past, with ostriches featured throughout the event in various forms. The festival provides a family-friendly experience, offering a mix of entertainment, education, and community spirit.
