Driving
To reach the Lava River Cave from Flagstaff, begin by heading north on US-180 for approximately 9 miles. Turn west (left) onto Forest Road 245 (FR 245) at milepost 230. Continue for 3 miles to Forest Road 171 (FR 171) and turn south (left). Drive 1 mile to Forest Road 171B (FR 171B) and turn left. Follow FR 171B a short distance to the Lava River Cave parking area. The final section of the route is on unpaved roads, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially in wet conditions. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes. Parking is free at the trailhead parking lot. Taxi services like Apex Taxi, Gypsy Cab, and Hurry Cab, as well as rideshare options such as Uber and Lyft, are available in Flagstaff. A taxi ride to the cave would cost an estimated $35-$50.
