If you're driving, start from the city of Flagstaff. Take US-180 N from downtown Flagstaff. Follow US-180 for about 14 miles where you will reach the San Francisco Peaks area. Look for signs indicating the Lava Flow Trail. Once you reach the parking area at Loop Rd, you will find the trailhead. There is no fee to park.

If you're using public transportation, take the Mountain Line bus route 10 from downtown Flagstaff towards the Snowbowl. This route operates regularly, but check the current schedule for times. Get off at the Snowbowl parking area. From there, you will need to walk approximately 1.5 miles along the Loop Rd to reach the Lava Flow Trailhead. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes as the walk is on a dirt road.
