Discover more about Giovale Open Deck Observatory (GODO)

The Giovale Open Deck Observatory (GODO), opened in 2019, is a state-of-the-art public observing plaza at Lowell Observatory, a registered National Historic Landmark. Named for philanthropists John and Ginger Giovale, GODO boasts six advanced telescopes, providing breathtaking views of celestial objects. Visitors can explore rich star fields, colorful planets, and nebulae with distinct structures, guided by knowledgeable staff and volunteers. GODO features a 5.5-inch wide-field refractor for expansive views of objects like the Andromeda Galaxy, an 8-inch Victorian refractor for detailed planetary observations, and a massive 32-inch Dobsonian reflector for deep-sky exploration. Daytime exhibits highlight spectroscopy and telescope technology, while plinths mark the sun's position during solstices and equinoxes. GODO is more than just telescopes; it's an invitation to connect with the vastness of space. Lowell Observatory itself has a rich history, founded by Percival Lowell in 1894. It was here that Pluto was discovered in 1930, and the observatory played a role in lunar mapping for the Apollo missions. Today, Lowell continues its mission to engage the public with astronomy, making GODO a must-visit destination for stargazers of all levels.
