Discover more about Midgley Bridge

Midgley Bridge, a picturesque steel deck arch, stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and a vital link in Arizona's Oak Creek Highway. Completed in 1939, the bridge was the final piece of the extensive upgrade of the Oak Creek Highway between Sedona and Flagstaff. The U.S. Bureau of Public Roads designed the bridge, which resembles a smaller version of the Navajo Bridge. The bridge's construction, initiated in March 1938, involved excavating the canyon walls to place the foundation. The steel structure was completed by October 31 of the same year. The bridge stretches 240 feet between reinforced concrete arch pedestals. Its design features two steel arch ribs constructed from built-up box beams with twin channels and double lacing. Named in honor of W.W. Midgley, a local rancher and highway supporter, the bridge has become an iconic landmark in the Sedona area. Today, Midgley Bridge attracts visitors with its stunning views of Wilson Canyon, Mitten Ridge, and the surrounding red rock formations. The Midgley Bridge Observation Site, located nearby, provides picnic tables, restrooms, and trail access. Hiking trails such as Wilson Canyon, Wilson Mountain, and Huckaby Trail can be accessed from this location.
