Phoenix Zoo: A Desert Oasis of Wildlife

The Phoenix Zoo, a Phoenix Point of Pride, has grown from a humble fish hatchery to become the largest privately owned non-profit zoo in the U.S.. Founded in 1962 by Robert Maytag, of the Maytag family, the zoo spans 125 acres in Papago Park and houses over 3,000 animals representing nearly 400 species. The zoo is organized into four themed trails: the Arizona Trail, showcasing native Southwest flora and fauna; the Africa Trail, featuring African wildlife; the Tropics Trail, exhibiting rainforest inhabitants; and the Children's Trail, which includes a petting zoo. Exhibits include the new Big Cats of Arizona, Desert Lives, Monkey Village, Harmony Farms, Orang-Hutan: People of the Forest, and Stingray Bay. Since its opening, the Phoenix Zoo has been dedicated to animal conservation, including reintroduction programs for species like the Arabian oryx. The zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for numerous species, focusing on animal husbandry and research. Conservation efforts extend to native Arizona species, such as the black-footed ferret, Chiricahua leopard frog, and Mexican wolf. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including animal encounters, playgrounds, a safari train tour, and a carousel. The Phoenix Zoo aims to inspire people to care for the natural world through conservation, education, and community engagement.
