Discover more about Moran Point

Moran Point is a renowned viewpoint along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, celebrated for its panoramic vistas and geological significance. Situated a few miles east of Grand Canyon Village, it provides an easily accessible and awe-inspiring introduction to the canyon's grandeur. While many believe it's named after the famed landscape artist Thomas Moran, whose paintings played a role in establishing the Grand Canyon as a national park, some suggest it may be named for his brother, Peter Moran. Regardless, the point has long been a source of inspiration for artists and photographers. From Moran Point, visitors can observe the three primary rock groups that compose the Grand Canyon: the Layered Paleozoic Rocks, the Grand Canyon Supergroup, and the Vishnu Basement Rocks. The Colorado River is also visible from this vantage point, cutting through the canyon's depths. The viewpoint offers a perspective of Red Canyon and the New Hance Trail. Geology enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunity to view the tilted layers of the Grand Canyon Supergroup, as well as the black Vishnu Schist and pink Zoroaster Granite of the Vishnu basement rocks. Informative signage at the point helps visitors identify the various geological features.
