Discover more about Lookout Studio

Lookout Studio, also known as "The Lookout", is a historic stone building located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon within Grand Canyon National Park. Designed by architect Mary Colter and completed in 1914, the studio was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railway to serve as a rest stop and observation point for visitors. Colter, who designed several other landmark structures in the Grand Canyon, including Hopi House, Hermit's Rest, and Desert View Watchtower, sought to create a building that appeared to grow organically from the canyon rim, mimicking the dwellings of the ancestral Puebloan people. The studio's exterior is constructed of jagged, native rocks, carefully arranged to blend in with the surrounding landscape. The multi-level rooflines and chimneys resemble the shapes of the bedrock, while the interior features exposed stone walls and structural log work. Large windows, framed in Colter's signature baby blue, offer plentiful light and stunning views of the canyon. Inside, visitors can explore the studio's various levels, each providing a distinct perspective of the Grand Canyon. Telescopes are available on the outdoor terrace for closer observation. The studio also houses a gift shop selling art prints and souvenirs. Lookout Studio was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and remains a favorite viewpoint for visitors to the Grand Canyon.
