    Discover more about Mather Point

Mather Point, located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, is one of the most popular and accessible viewpoints in the park. Named in honor of Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, the point provides visitors with their first glimpse of the canyon's immense scale and beauty. Mather's vision for the National Park Service emphasized preserving natural landscapes while promoting tourism, making Mather Point a fitting tribute to his legacy. From Mather Point, visitors can see over 30 miles (48 km) to the east and over 60 miles (96 km) to the west on a clear day. The views extend to notable landmarks such as Wotan's Throne, Brahman, and Zoroaster Temples. Looking down, the Colorado River can be seen snaking through the canyon, along with Phantom Ranch and various trails. The layered rock formations, including the Kaibab Limestone, Coconino Sandstone, and Vishnu Schist, showcase the canyon's geological history. The viewpoint features two overlooks with safety rails, providing secure vantage points for admiring the landscape. Recent improvements have made Mather Point a vehicle-free zone, enhancing the visitor experience with an accessible viewing platform and a rim-side amphitheater for ranger programs. A medallion honoring the tribes associated with the Grand Canyon is carved into the stone walkway leading to the rim. Mather Point is accessible via the free park shuttle, personal vehicle (with parking at the Visitor Center), or by walking along the Rim Trail.
