Discover more about Powell Point

Powell Point is a stunning overlook along the South Rim's Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park. Named in honor of John Wesley Powell, the one-armed Civil War veteran and geologist who led the first documented expeditions down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869 and 1872. The point offers nearly 360-degree, unobstructed views of the vast canyon landscape. Visitors can climb the Powell Memorial, a granite structure dedicated to Powell's historic explorations. From this vantage point, the Bright Angel Trail can be seen as it zigzags down the canyon walls. Binoculars might reveal mule trains carrying riders to Phantom Ranch. The remnants of the old Orphan Uranium Mine, a Superfund cleanup site, are also visible. Powell Point is the location where Grand Canyon National Park was dedicated in 1920. Today, it's a popular spot for watching the sunset, often less crowded than nearby Hopi Point. The paved Powell Point Trail makes the overlook accessible.
