Discover more about London Bridge

The London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, is not just a bridge; it's a remarkable story of architectural preservation and a testament to human ingenuity. Originally built in London in the 1830s, it spanned the River Thames. By the 1960s, the bridge was structurally unsound and unable to handle the increasing traffic. Instead of demolishing it, the City of London decided to sell it. Robert P. McCulloch, the founder of Lake Havasu City, purchased the bridge in 1968 for $2.46 million. Each stone was meticulously numbered, and the bridge was disassembled and shipped to Lake Havasu City. Reconstruction began in 1968, and the bridge was rededicated in 1971. A canal was dredged to separate Pittsburgh Point from the mainland, creating an island and allowing the bridge to span water once again. Today, the London Bridge stands as a major tourist attraction. Visitors can walk or drive across it, explore the shops and restaurants in the nearby English Village, and take boat tours to see the bridge from a different perspective. The bridge is especially enchanting during the holidays when it is illuminated with over 500,000 lights. The interior of the bridge is hollow, which helps reduce its weight and allows it to accommodate automobile traffic. Keep an eye out for the original numbering on the stones from when the bridge was disassembled in London.
