Discover more about Carefree Sundial

The Carefree Sundial, located in Sundial Circle Plaza, Carefree, Arizona, is a captivating landmark that blends art, engineering, and history. Constructed in 1959, the sundial was designed by architect Joe Wong and solar engineer John I. Yellott. It was conceived as a marketing device for a residential estate, envisioned by developers Kenyon Palmer and Tom Darlington to attract residents and visitors. The sundial measures 90 feet (27 m) in diameter, with the metal gnomon, the shadow-casting portion, standing 35 feet (11 m) above the plaza and extending 62 feet (19 m). The structure is made from a steel frame covered in anodized copper. The hour-lines are offset to account for the plaza's longitude. A smaller 1/48 scale model is on site along with an equation of time table. Over the years, the Carefree Sundial has become a symbol of the town and a popular tourist attraction. It represents the town's name and ethos, emphasizing a relaxed and leisurely lifestyle. The sundial also reflects the broader historical and cultural significance of sundials as ancient timekeeping methods, connecting the modern town with a long tradition of solar observation. Visitors can stroll around the sundial and explore the surrounding Carefree Desert Gardens.
