Discover more about Dreamy Draw Recreation Area

Dreamy Draw Recreation Area, located at the base of Piestewa Peak in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, provides a tranquil retreat into the heart of the Sonoran Desert. The area's name dates back to the early 20th century when miners in the area extracted cinnabar, a mineral processed to extract mercury. The neurotoxins from the mineral left miners in an inebriated state, hence the name "Dreamy Draw". Today, Dreamy Draw is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The recreation area features a variety of hiking trails suitable for all skill levels, from easy strolls to more challenging climbs. The Dreamy Draw Nature Trail is a short, multi-access loop that offers a true Sonoran Desert experience, with native trees, plant life, and glimpses of wildlife like coyotes and rabbits. The paved Dreamy Draw Bikeway provides a smooth path for cyclists and casual walkers. The park also offers amenities such as picnic ramadas, restrooms, and ample parking. Recent improvements have expanded the parking area and added accessible routes, making the park more welcoming to all visitors. Dreamy Draw is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., with gated roadways and trailhead parking areas accessible from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.
