Discover more about Arizona Route 66 Museum

The Arizona Route 66 Museum, located in Kingman's Powerhouse Visitor Center, offers a captivating journey through the history of America's most iconic highway. Opened in September 2001, the museum depicts the historical evolution of travel along the 35th parallel that became Route 66. The museum is housed in the historic Desert Power & Water Co. Electric Power Plant, also known as the Powerhouse, which was built in two phases between 1907 and 1911. This building once supplied power to Kingman and nearby mines and even contributed to the construction of Hoover Dam. The Powerhouse itself is a historic landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, you'll find imaginative and ever-expanding displays featuring vehicles, photographs, and artifacts gathered over the years. Life-size dioramas and murals capture the experiences of those who traveled the Mother Road, from Native American trade routes and U.S. Army expeditions to Dust Bowl refugees and families on their summer vacations. A small theater shows a one-hour movie about Route 66 in Arizona. The museum also includes the Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum, showcasing a collection of electric vehicles. Exciting updates are underway in preparation for the Route 66 Centennial in 2026. These enhancements include a dog park outside, reinstallation of historic-style windows, refinishing of original flooring, a new 3D map, interactive kiosks, and immersive wall displays with historic Route 66 imagery. A dedicated Lewis Kingman exhibit will also debut.
