Getting There

Driving

Fort Apache Historical Park is located off Highway 73, approximately 5 miles south of Whiteriver, Arizona. From Whiteriver, head south on Highway 73. Turn left onto Scout Street. The park entrance will be on your left. There is ample parking available at the park. Admission to the park is $5.00 per adult, $3.00 for seniors (64+) and students, and free for children under 7.

Fort Apache Historical Park, located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, offers a unique glimpse into the intertwined histories of the White Mountain Apache Tribe and the U.S. Army. Established in 1870, the fort played a crucial role in the Apache Wars and later served as a recruitment point for Apache scouts.Today, the park encompasses 27 historic buildings dating from the 1870s to the 1930s, including barracks, officer's quarters, and the Theodore Roosevelt Indian Boarding School. Visitors can explore these buildings on a self-guided walking tour, with maps available at the Nohwike' Bágowa Museum. The museum showcases Apache history and culture through exhibits, artifacts, and multimedia presentations, including a recreation of the Apache creation story.Highlights of the park include General Crook's Cabin, the oldest structure at Fort Apache, dating back to 1871. The Fort Apache Cemetery, located a short distance from the main grounds, is accessible via a walking trail or road. For those seeking outdoor adventure, a 1.4-mile loop trail through East Fork Canyon leads to the site of an Apache scout camp and an ancestral Pueblo village.Admission to the park also includes access to the Kinishba Ruins, an ancient pueblo structure located four miles west of Fort Apache. This National Historic Landmark was once inhabited by the Zuni and Hopi ancestors of the Apache.
