- Obtain necessary permits for whitewater rafting well in advance, as they are required from March 1 to May 15 and can be competitive.
- Be prepared for challenging access; there are no maintained trails, so plan your route carefully and wear appropriate footwear.
- Visit during the spring to witness the stunning wildflower bloom in the Sonoran Desert.
- Check road conditions before you go, especially during snow or heavy rain, as a high-clearance vehicle may be required.
- Bring plenty of water, as potable water is not generally available in the area.

Driving
The most common approach to the Salt River Canyon Wilderness is via U.S. Route 60. From Globe, AZ, head northeast on U.S. 60. The highway descends into the canyon via a series of switchbacks, crosses the Salt River, and ascends the other side. There are several overlooks and pullouts along the way to stop and take in the scenery. Be aware that this route involves steep grades and hairpin turns, so drive cautiously. There are no entrance fees for the Salt River Canyon Wilderness Area. Parking is available at designated pull-outs and trailheads. There are no toll roads on this route.

Shuttle Service
For those planning a multi-day rafting trip, several shuttle services are available to transport vehicles from the put-in point (US Hwy 60 Bridge) to the take-out point (AZ 288 Bridge). Companies like Wilderness Aware Rafting and Salt River Rafting offer this service. The cost for the first vehicle is around $200, with each additional vehicle costing $150. Reservations are highly recommended due to limited capacity. These shuttle services operate primarily in March and April, depending on water conditions.
