Monument Valley Viewpoint

Monument Valley, a Navajo Tribal Park straddling the border of Arizona and Utah, is a landscape sculpted over millions of years by wind and water. Once a lowland basin, the area saw layers of sediment deposited and then uplifted, forming a plateau. The relentless forces of nature carved away softer materials, leaving behind the towering sandstone buttes that define the valley today.The viewpoint offers a sweeping vista of these natural masterpieces, including the iconic Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. These formations, rising 400 to 1,000 feet, are not just geological wonders but also hold deep significance for the Navajo people, known as the Diné. For centuries, they have inhabited this land, their traditions and history intertwined with the landscape. The buttes, mesas, and sandstone formations are revered as living entities, witnesses to Navajo traditions.Visitors can explore the valley through the 17-mile Valley Drive, a dirt loop offering access to various viewpoints. However, the terrain can be rough, and an SUV or truck is recommended. Guided tours, whether by Jeep, horseback, or on foot, provide deeper insights into the valley's geology, history, and Navajo culture. These tours often access areas not open to individual exploration, revealing ancient cliff dwellings and natural arches. The park is open year-round, with varying hours depending on the season.
