Lynx Lake, located in the Prescott National Forest, is a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking respite in the cool mountain air of central Arizona. At an elevation of 5,530 feet, the 55-acre lake is surrounded by a picturesque landscape of ponderosa pine and oak forests. Created in 1963 by damming Lynx Creek, the lake has become a hub for various recreational activities. Fishing is a major draw, with the lake regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Anglers can also find largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish in its waters. A valid Arizona fishing license is required for those over 10 years old. Boating is popular, with non-motorized and electric-powered boats permitted, ensuring a peaceful experience on the water. Kayaks and canoes are ideal for exploring the lake's serene coves. Hiking enthusiasts can enjoy the Lynx Lake Loop Trail, a 2.6-mile path that encircles the lake, offering scenic views and varying levels of accessibility. The western side of the trail is paved and wheelchair accessible, while the eastern side is a narrower dirt footpath. Two campgrounds, Lynx Campground and Hilltop Campground, provide convenient overnight stays, with campsites available from April through October. These campgrounds offer amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms. While swimming is prohibited, the lake offers plenty of opportunities for picnicking, bird watching, and simply relaxing in nature. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including mule deer, bald eagles, and javelinas. The area also has a rich history, with archaeological sites and remnants of early mining operations adding to its allure. Note that water levels may be low due to dam maintenance.
