The Battle of the Bulls Mormon Monument, located near Sierra Vista, Arizona, marks the site of a peculiar but significant event in the history of the American West. In December 1846, the Mormon Battalion, en route to California during the Mexican-American War, camped along the San Pedro River. Abandoned by Spanish or Mexican ranchers, a herd of wild bulls stampeded the camp, resulting in a chaotic skirmish. The 'battle' resulted in three men wounded, two mules gored, and the death of over ten bulls. Despite being the battalion's only 'battle' during its service, the event became a memorable footnote in their journey. A stone marker, erected by Boy Scout Troop No. 21 in 1960, commemorates the event. The inscription reads: “Mormon Battalion: The Narrows, Dec. 12, 1846, Battle of the Bulls, Erected 1960”. Today, visitors can explore the monument and reflect on this unique historical encounter. The site offers scenic views of the San Pedro River and the surrounding landscape.
