Discover more about Theodore Roosevelt Dam

Theodore Roosevelt Dam, located about 76 miles northeast of Phoenix, Arizona, is a testament to early 20th-century engineering and the vision of taming the Salt River for irrigation and flood control. Completed in 1911 and later modified in 1996, the dam stands as the first major project of the Bureau of Reclamation and a cornerstone of Arizona's water management system. Named after President Theodore Roosevelt, who championed the Reclamation Act of 1902, the dam and its reservoir, Roosevelt Lake, have shaped the region's history and development.Originally constructed as the world's largest cyclopean masonry dam, it employed massive, irregular blocks of stone. The dam's height was increased in the 1990s, transforming it into a concrete-gravity arch dam, expanding Roosevelt Lake's storage capacity. Today, the dam stands 357 feet tall and holds back over 1.6 million acre-feet of water, ensuring a reliable water supply and hydroelectric power generation.Visitors can explore the dam and learn about its history through informational plaques and viewing areas. Roosevelt Lake offers recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and water sports. Nearby, the Tonto National Monument provides a glimpse into ancient Salado culture with its well-preserved cliff dwellings.
