Discover more about Spur Cross Ranch Conservation

Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, a 2,154-acre park in Maricopa County, is a haven of natural beauty and historical significance. Established in 2001, it showcases the rugged Sonoran Desert landscape with diverse ecosystems and remnants of early settlements. The area boasts nearly 10 miles of trails, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes, with elevations over 3,000 feet. The trails wind through stands of mesquite, willow, and cottonwood trees along Cave Creek. Keep an eye out for unusual desert birds such as Costa's Hummingbirds, as well as various migrating and wintering species. The riparian habitat along Cave Creek has earned the area the designation of Important Bird Area by Audubon Arizona. Spur Cross Ranch has a rich history, with evidence of inhabitants dating back to the Hohokam people who farmed the land along the creek from 800 A.D. to 1400 A.D. The Apache and Hopi Indians also considered the area sacred. In the 1860s, prospectors drawn by gold discoveries briefly settled in the area but were driven away by the Tonto Apache. Later, in 1928, Edward Joyce and Philip Lewis established a ranch, entertaining guests with horseback rides and parties. Warren and Billie Beaubien bought the ranch in 1945, accommodating up to 24 guests and hosting celebrations. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the old dude ranch along the Metate Trail. The Spur Cross Trail, open to bicycles, is a favorite among mountain bikers. The Dragonfly Trail connects to the adjacent Jewel of the Creek Preserve, offering additional exploration opportunities.
