Sentinel Peak, or 'A' Mountain, is a 2,897-foot peak located in the Tucson Mountains, just southwest of downtown Tucson. The mountain has a rich history, serving as a lookout point for Native Americans, early settlers, and even soldiers during the Civil War. The area's first inhabitants farmed at the mountain's base along the Santa Cruz River around 2000 BCE. The name 'Tucson' itself is derived from the O'odham word 'Cuk Ṣon', meaning 'the base [of the mountain] is black'.The iconic 'A' that adorns the mountain was constructed in 1915 by University of Arizona students using local basalt rock. Every year, UA students and alumni celebrate Homecoming with a ceremonial lighting of the 'A'. Today, Sentinel Peak is a popular destination for hiking, sunset watching, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert.The mountain is made up of layers of igneous rock, remnants of volcanic activity from 20-30 million years ago. Visitors can explore the network of trails around the peak, offering views of the surrounding landscape, including the Santa Cruz River Valley and the Tucson Mountains.

Driving
Sentinel Peak is accessible by car via Sentinel Peak Road. From downtown Tucson, take Congress Street west to Cuesta Avenue, which turns into Sentinel Peak Road South. The road is a one-way loop that leads directly to the parking area near the summit. Be aware that the road has no guard rail in some sections, so drive carefully. Vehicle access is limited to certain hours. Check the current schedule before you go. Parking is free.
Public Transport
Sun Tran, Tucson's public transit system, may offer routes that get you within walking distance of Sentinel Peak. Check the Sun Tran website or app for the most up-to-date routes and schedules. From a Sun Tran stop, you may need to walk or take a ride-share service to reach the entrance of Sentinel Peak Park. As of July 2025, Sun Tran rides are fare-free.

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available in Tucson. A ride from downtown Tucson to Sentinel Peak will typically cost between $10 and $20, depending on demand and time of day. Be sure to confirm the fare before you start your ride.
