Discover more about Aztec Ruins National Monument

Aztec Ruins National Monument, located in present-day Aztec, New Mexico, offers a captivating journey into the world of the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited this region between 1100 and 1300 AD. Despite its name, the site has no connection to the Aztec civilization of central Mexico. The name originated from early American settlers who mistakenly attributed the ruins to the Aztecs. The monument protects a significant complex of structures built by the Ancestral Puebloans, including the impressive "West Ruin," a great house containing over 400 interconnected rooms and numerous kivas. These structures were constructed using sandstone and timber, demonstrating remarkable architectural and engineering skills. Visitors can explore the ruins via a self-guided, half-mile trail, venturing into original rooms and observing the remarkably preserved timber roofs and original mortar. A highlight of the monument is the reconstructed Great Kiva, the largest of its kind in North America. This semi-subterranean ceremonial chamber with an inner diameter of 48 feet, served as a central religious site for the community. The meticulous reconstruction of the Great Kiva allows visitors to experience a tangible connection to the spiritual practices of the Ancestral Puebloans. The visitor center, housed in the former Earl Morris residence, offers museum exhibits, a park film, and information about the site's history and significance. Ranger-led tours and talks are available during the summer months, providing deeper insights into the lives and culture of the Ancestral Puebloans. The monument also features a heritage garden, picnic area, and a segment of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail. Aztec Ruins National Monument is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its preservation of important Pueblo architectural and engineering achievements. It provides a unique opportunity to explore the legacy of the Ancestral Puebloans and their enduring contributions to the American Southwest.
