Discover more about Montezuma Well

Montezuma Well is a captivating natural wonder and historical site located in the Verde Valley of central Arizona. This large sinkhole, formed by the collapse of an underground cave, is filled with a constant supply of water from underground springs, providing a unique aquatic habitat. The water emerges at a rate of approximately 1.5 million US gallons (5,700,000 L) per day. The consistent water supply has made this location a crucial resource for life in the arid landscape for millennia.Archaeological evidence indicates that humans have inhabited the Verde Valley for at least 10,000 years. Around 600 CE, the Hohokam people began diverting water from the well to irrigate crops. Later, the Sinagua culture constructed dwellings in the cliffs around the well, with their community thriving until the early 1400s. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of these ancient dwellings and irrigation systems, gaining insight into the lives of those who depended on the well. The site is considered sacred by the Yavapai people, who believe it is their place of origin. The well is roughly the size of a football field and maintains a consistent water level throughout the year. The water chemistry is unusual, with high levels of carbon dioxide and arsenic, which prevent fish from living in the well. However, several unique species of invertebrates have adapted to these conditions. A half-mile paved trail allows visitors to explore the site, including the well rim, the swallet (a cave dwelling at water level), and the outlet where water flows into Beaver Creek.
