Tonto Upper Cliff Dwelling, White Mountains Travel Guide

The Upper Cliff Dwelling at Tonto National Monument offers a captivating journey into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and cultural richness of the Salado people. Constructed around 1300 CE and inhabited until the basin's abandonment between 1400 and 1450 CE, this 40-room dwelling is nestled within a natural alcove high above the Tonto Basin. The monument is located in central Arizona and protects cliff dwelling sites.Built within a cave that is 70 feet wide, 80 feet high, and 60 feet deep, the Upper Cliff Dwelling provided shelter and a strategic vantage point for its inhabitants. The dwelling comprises living quarters, some with second-story rooms, and a large open work area that includes a cistern capable of holding approximately 100 gallons of water. The Salado people, a blend of Ancestral Puebloan, Ancestral Sonoran Desert, and Mogollon cultures, created a unique way of life in this region.Visitors can observe partially intact roofs, stone and slab door lintels, and even the remains of three-story-tall rooms. The small doorways were designed to help regulate temperatures within the rooms. Access to the Upper Cliff Dwelling is exclusively through guided tours, offered from November through April, ensuring the preservation of this fragile backcountry site. The moderate 1.5-mile hike to the dwelling provides panoramic views of the Tonto Basin and Theodore Roosevelt Lake.
