Discover more about Jacob Wolf House

Nestled in Norfork, Arkansas, overlooking the confluence of the White and North Fork Rivers, the Jacob Wolf House is a remarkable survivor from the Arkansas Territory. Constructed in 1829 by Jacob Wolf, a prominent merchant, builder, and legislator, this two-story dogtrot log structure served as the first permanent courthouse for Izard County. Wolf, who arrived in the area in 1820, recognized the potential of the river junction as a trading post. He established a homestead and ferry service, which led to the development of the town of Liberty (now Norfork). As a representative in the General Assembly, Wolf successfully secured the location of the county courthouse in Liberty and won the contract to build it.The Jacob Wolf House is a testament to early American frontier architecture. The two-story dogtrot design features a central breezeway on the first level, with a large courtroom occupying the upper level. The lower level housed the county clerk's office, where John P. Houston, brother of Sam Houston, once served. The house witnessed the arrival of countless settlers, the administration of justice, and the vibrant social life of the community. After the county seat moved in 1835, Wolf converted the building into his family home, where he lived with his large family until his death in 1863. The house remained a significant landmark, hosting travelers and serving as a center for Wolf's various business ventures. Today, the Jacob Wolf House is a museum that offers a glimpse into Arkansas's territorial history, early 19th-century life, and the impact of the Trail of Tears, as the Benge Route passed through Norfork.
