Discover more about The Old Mill

The Old Mill, located in North Little Rock's T.R. Pugh Memorial Park, is more than just a scenic spot; it's a step back in time. Constructed in 1933, the mill is a recreation of an 1880s water-powered grist mill, designed to evoke the feeling of a long-abandoned piece of Arkansas history.Developer Justin Matthews commissioned the mill as a tourist attraction to draw people to his new suburban development. He hired Mexican sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez to create the mill and surrounding sculptures in the 'faux bois' style, using reinforced concrete to mimic petrified wood. The park is adorned with Rodriguez's unique sculptures, including toadstools, tree stumps, and a distinctive bridge crafted to resemble intertwined tree branches. The Old Mill gained fame after appearing in the opening credits of the 1939 film 'Gone With the Wind'. It's believed to be the only remaining structure from the film, making it a significant landmark for movie buffs and history enthusiasts alike. The site attracts thousands of visitors each year. The mill itself contains historic relics, including a grist mill dating back to 1828 and millstones from the 1820s and 1840s. Two original milestones, dating back over 150 years from a road laid out by Jefferson Davis, are also present.Today, the Old Mill is a popular destination for visitors and locals alike. It's a place where people can relax, enjoy the scenery, and capture memorable photos. The park is open to the public from 8:00 AM until sunset, offering a peaceful retreat for all ages.
