The USS Razorback (SS-394), a Balao-class submarine, offers a unique glimpse into naval history at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum in North Little Rock. Christened in 1944, the Razorback earned five battle stars for World War II service, participating in patrols, sinking Japanese vessels, and even taking part in the formal surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay. After serving in the Pacific Fleet and undergoing modernization, the Razorback continued its service, earning four campaign stars for Vietnam War service. In 1970, the submarine was decommissioned and transferred to the Turkish Navy, where it was recommissioned as TCG Muratreis (S 336) and served for many years. In 2004, the city of North Little Rock acquired the USS Razorback, bringing it to Arkansas as a museum ship. Today, visitors can tour the submarine, experiencing the sights, sounds, and even smells of life aboard a historic vessel. The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum also features exhibits on other naval vessels and Arkansas River history, making it a unique destination for maritime enthusiasts.
