Discover more about Old Main

Old Main, originally known as University Hall, is the oldest building on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. Constructed between 1873 and 1875, it has become a recognizable symbol of the University and higher education in Arkansas. Designed by Chicago architect John Mills Van Osdel, it was modeled after the University Hall at the University of Illinois. The building's architecture showcases the Second Empire style, featuring a distinctive mansard roof. The north tower reaches 130 feet, while the south tower stands at 123 feet. Local materials were used in its construction, including lumber from War Eagle Mill and bricks made from clay dug nearby. Over the years, Old Main has served various functions, housing academic departments, administrative offices, a gymnasium, chapel, museum, and library. After falling into disrepair, it was closed in 1981 for safety reasons. A restoration project began in 1989 and was completed in 1991, preserving many original features while updating the building to meet modern standards. Today, it houses the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, classrooms, and meeting spaces. Visitors can explore the restored classrooms and appreciate the architecture. The east portico is featured on the university seal. The building also has a bell that was installed in 1879, though it is not regularly used. Electronic bells now play the Westminster Chimes and the alma mater at certain hours.
