The Delta Heritage Trail State Park offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural history of the Arkansas Delta. This developing state park is converting 84.5 miles of abandoned Union Pacific Railroad into a scenic trail for hikers and cyclists.Acquired in 1992 and dedicated in 2002, the park's trail follows a former railway corridor through the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. As you traverse the trail, you'll be immersed in the Delta's distinctive landscape, characterized by wetlands, forests, and agricultural fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and diverse bird species.The park is being developed in phases, with approximately 69.8 miles currently open. The completed sections include a northern corridor from Lexa to Snow Lake and a southern section between Arkansas City and Yancopin. The trail features a compacted limestone surface suitable for most ages and abilities.The Barton Trailhead serves as the park's headquarters, featuring a visitor center with restrooms, a gift shop, and bike rentals. Five primitive campsites are available for those wishing to extend their stay. Other trailheads along the route provide parking and access points to explore different sections of the trail.
