Discover more about Louisiana Purchase State Park

Louisiana Purchase State Park protects the initial survey point for the vast Louisiana Purchase, a landmark that shaped the American West. In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the United States. In 1815, surveyors established a point of origin to divide the new territory for distribution to veterans of the War of 1812. This park, located in a remote swamp, marks that origin.A 950-foot boardwalk, designated as a National Recreation Trail, guides visitors through a rare headwater swamp. This swampy landscape, largely unchanged since 1815, features towering bald cypress and water tupelo trees. Informational panels along the boardwalk tell the story of the Louisiana Purchase, the survey, and the swamp's unique ecosystem. The boardwalk leads to a granite monument erected in 1926, marking the precise initial survey point. The park's complex plant life includes swamp species like bald cypress, black willow, and buttonbush alongside upland species like sweet gum and sassafras. The area is also home to diverse bird species. Louisiana Purchase State Park offers a blend of historical significance and natural beauty, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into the past and the landscape that shaped a nation.
