The Randolph County Heritage Museum, which opened in 2006 during Pocahontas' Sesquicentennial celebration, is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and culture of Randolph County. Housed in a former mercantile building that is a contributing structure to the Pocahontas commercial historic district, the museum features three main room-sized exhibits. The River Room highlights the contributions of the five rivers in Randolph County through transportation, industry, and recreation. Exhibits include a working button machine demonstrating the region's button-making industry using mussel shells from the Black River. You'll also find a collection of pearls, original tools, photographs of steamboats, and a seven-foot alligator gar caught in the Black River. The Medical Room showcases the early practice of medicine in Randolph County, with examination tables, chairs, a one-of-a-kind X-ray machine, pharmaceutical utensils, and portraits of early physicians. The Artifacts Room displays archaeological finds from Davidsonville Historic State Park, the site of the first post office, courthouse, and land office in Arkansas Territory. The museum also hosts exhibits dedicated to the cultural heritage of the Ozark foothills, including a wool spinning wheel, quilts, and items from the historic St. Paul's Catholic Church. Exhibits also commemorate the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Rotating exhibits and special events are scheduled throughout the year, ensuring a fresh experience with each visit. The museum also provides informational programs and interactive exhibits.
