Basin Spring Park: Eureka Springs' Historic Heart

Basin Spring Park, located at 4 Spring St in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is more than just a park; it's the historic heart of the city. The park's origins trace back to the Native American legends of a Great Healing Spring in the area, which drew various cultures to the springs for sacred purposes. Dr. Alvah Jackson, credited with locating the spring, claimed its waters cured his eye ailments and even used them to treat patients during the Civil War. In the late 19th century, Eureka Springs transformed into a flourishing city and tourist destination, with Basin Spring at its center. Although beliefs in the spring's curative powers faded, the park remains a reminder of the town's origins, with the spring's water still flowing. The park provides a space for weary shoppers to rest, and trails wind up the hill behind it, offering great views of the town. Today, Basin Spring Park hosts various events, including the Basin Park Concert Series and drum circles. With its shaded trees and a bandshell dating back to around 1921, the park effectively serves as the town square.
