Discover more about Thorncrown Chapel

Thorncrown Chapel, a celebrated architectural gem in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, rises 48 feet into the Ozark sky, offering visitors a unique spiritual and visual experience. Designed by E. Fay Jones, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright, the chapel's design reflects the Prairie School of architecture and is affectionately labeled as “Ozark Gothic”. Jim Reed, a retired schoolteacher, envisioned a non-denominational chapel set apart for meditation and commissioned Jones to bring his dream to life. Opened on July 10, 1980, Thorncrown Chapel has since welcomed over seven million visitors. The chapel's structure is made with organic materials, featuring 425 windows comprising over 6,000 square feet of glass, all supported by more than 100 tons of native stone and colored flagstone. The intricate latticework of wooden beams creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the chapel's ethereal atmosphere. Inspired by Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, Thorncrown Chapel embodies a sense of peace and calm, inviting visitors to pray, meditate, or simply reflect on the natural surroundings. The chapel has received numerous architectural accolades, including the American Institute of Architects' Design of the Year Award in 1981 and the AIA Twenty-five Year Award in 2006. It was also named as the fourth-best building of the twentieth century by the American Institute of Architects. Thorncrown Chapel is a popular wedding venue, offering a picturesque setting surrounded by rock formations and trees. The chapel is open daily from March to December, and admission is free, though donations are appreciated.
