Discover more about Quigley's Castle

Quigley's Castle, often called "The Ozarks' Strangest Dwelling," is a testament to one woman's vision and love for nature. Located just south of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, this unusual home and garden is the creation of Elise Quigley, who designed and built it with her husband, Albert, in 1943. Elise Quigley's unique design incorporates a two-story space for tropical plants within the home. She achieved this by creating a four-foot-wide atrium between the inner and outer walls, allowing plants to grow freely. Many of these plants have flourished over the years, reaching the second-story ceiling. The exterior of the house is equally remarkable, adorned with rocks, fossils, crystals, and arrowheads that Elise collected since childhood. Inside, visitors can admire family antiques, Elise's rock and bottle sculptures, and her famous "Butterfly Wall," a collection of butterflies and moths arranged in a beautiful collage. The surrounding gardens feature over 400 varieties of perennials, rock sculptures, a lily pond, and unique creations like bottle trees and a 200-foot rock fence. Quigley's Castle is open to visitors from March through November. It offers a glimpse into the life and creativity of Elise Quigley, a woman who brought her dream of living in harmony with nature to life.
