The Chaffee Crossing Historic District provides a walkable journey through American military history, beginning with World War II. Established in September 1941 as Camp Chaffee, the area played a crucial role in training and equipping U.S. Army divisions. Today, the district integrates historical sites with modern residential, dining, retail, and recreational venues. Key attractions include the Chaffee Barbershop Museum, where Elvis Presley received his iconic military haircut in 1958. The Fort Chaffee Barracks Museum showcases exhibits dedicated to soldiers, as well as Cuban and Vietnamese refugees, and German POWs who passed through the fort. The Museum of Chaffee History features extensive photographs and documents that chronicle Fort Chaffee's involvement in five wars, resettlement operations, and even major motion pictures. The Maness School House, built in 1937, is the only original building that remained when the Department of Defense acquired the land and now houses the Stonehouse at Chaffee Crossing restaurant. The district also features the Enchanted Wedding Chapel, a historic military chapel constructed in 1942, and Memorial Plaza, a space dedicated to honoring the men and women who served.
