Discover more about Esse Purse Museum & Store

ESSE Purse Museum & Store, nestled in Little Rock's historic South Main (SoMa) district, offers a captivating exploration of 20th-century American women's history through the lens of their handbags. Founded by Anita Davis, the museum's name, derived from the Latin word "esse" meaning "to be," reflects the idea that a purse is more than just an accessory; it's an extension of a woman's essence and her place in the world. The museum's permanent exhibit, "What's Inside: A Century of Women and Handbags 1900–1999," presents a decade-by-decade display of purses and their contents, illustrating how war, fashion, and economics influenced women's lives. Each display case offers a peek into the atmosphere of the time, revealing the items women carried and the changing roles they played in society. From the clutch bags of the early 1900s to the larger, more practical bags of the war years and the pop-art-inspired designs of the 1960s and 70s, the exhibit showcases the evolution of both fashion and feminine identity. Beyond the permanent collection, ESSE hosts temporary exhibits that explore diverse aspects of women's experiences and expressions. Past exhibits have included collaborations with other cultural institutions and displays of various art forms, all touching on the museum's core mission of empowering and honoring women. The museum also features a store offering a curated selection of new and vintage-inspired handbags, jewelry, and accessories, many handcrafted by local, national, and international artisans. Located in a renovated 1946 auto repair garage, ESSE Purse Museum has become a cultural hub in the SoMa district.
