Discover more about Arkansas Railroad Museum

Step back in time at the Arkansas Railroad Museum, where you can explore the rich history of rail transportation in Arkansas. Located in Pine Bluff, the museum is housed in the former Cotton Belt Railroad machine shops, a building constructed between 1882 and 1894. This unique setting provides an authentic backdrop for the museum's impressive collection of locomotives, railcars, and railroad memorabilia. The museum's origins trace back to the Cotton Belt Historical Society's efforts to preserve the last steam-powered locomotive built in Arkansas. That locomotive, SSW 819, a 4-8-4 Northern-type engine, is now the museum's centerpiece. Built in Pine Bluff in 1942, the 819 served the Cotton Belt Railroad for 12 years before being replaced by diesel engines. After years of outdoor display and deterioration, a group of volunteers, many of whom were retired railroad workers, restored the 819 to operating condition in the 1980s. Today, the Arkansas Railroad Museum boasts a diverse collection of railway equipment, including steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses, and a variety of specialized railcars. Highlights include SSW 336, a 2-6-0 engine built in 1909, and UP 2907, a rare 3,000-horsepower C-630 diesel locomotive. Visitors can climb aboard many of the trains and explore their interiors, offering a hands-on glimpse into the world of railroading. The museum also features exhibits of railroad tools, uniforms, and artifacts, providing context and detail to the story of Arkansas's railroads. A gift shop offers souvenirs and mementos of your visit. The Arkansas Railroad Museum is operated by the Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society and local volunteers. It hosts events throughout the year, including the annual Railroadiana Show and Sale, which features vintage railroad memorabilia and model trains. Four of the museum's railcars, including locomotive 819, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
