Discover more about The Bernice Garden

The Bernice Garden, located in the heart of Little Rock's South Main (SoMa) district, is a unique and inviting space that embodies community, sustainability, and local art. This privately-owned garden, situated at the corner of Daisy Bates Avenue and South Main Street, provides a green oasis amidst the urban landscape. Founded in 2007 by Anita Davis, the garden is named in homage to the Bernice Building and Davis's grandmother, both named Bernice. Davis envisioned the space as a gathering place to celebrate community, sustainability, and local artists. The garden has since become a beloved venue for various events, including farmers' markets, weddings, receptions, and art exhibits. The garden features a central wooden canopy, constructed in 2011 from reclaimed wood, providing shade and a focal point for gatherings. A 50-gallon cistern collects rainwater, which is then used to irrigate the garden's plants. The sculptures displayed throughout the garden are crafted from sustainable, recycled, or "green" materials, reflecting the spirit, nature, and history of Arkansas. The Bernice Garden also hosts a popular Sunday Farmers' Market during the months of May, June and July, offering local produce and handmade items. The Bernice Garden stands on land with a rich history. It was once part of the Augustus Garland-Mitchell House property, dating back to 1873. This historic house was home to prominent figures, including Augustus Garland, who served as governor, senator, and the first Arkansan in a presidential cabinet.
