Discover more about Bjni Fortress

Bjni Fortress, perched atop a mesa in the Kotayk Province, is a captivating historical site that echoes with the stories of medieval Armenia. Constructed between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Pahlavuni princes of the Bagratuni dynasty, the fortress was a strategic stronghold, protecting the village of Bjni and the surrounding Nig province. The fortress is located 46 km from Yerevan. Vasak Holum Pahlavuni, the commander of Bjni, reconstructed the fortress in the 11th century, further fortifying its defenses. Bjni's strategic importance is highlighted by the fact that in 1066, it hosted the election of the Catholicos of All Armenians. The fortress witnessed numerous invasions, including those by Turkish soldiers in 1021 and was besieged by Timur Lenk in the 14th century. The fortress complex once comprised residences, a church, reservoirs, and defensive walls designed to withstand prolonged sieges. The Church of St. Astvatsatsin, dating back to the 11th century, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the era. Legends whisper of a hidden spring within the fortress, its waters believed to possess healing properties. Although partially ruined, the fortress retains its historical charm, offering visitors a chance to explore Armenia's past. Visitors can explore the remains of the fortification walls, which follow the mesa's contours. Traces of former structures are visible, including the stone foundation of a 5th-century church and two cisterns. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Hrazdan River Valley.
