Haghartsin Monastery, meaning 'the game of eagles,' is a captivating monastic complex located 18 km from Dilijan, deep within the Tavush Province. Founded between the 10th and 13th centuries, the monastery showcases a remarkable blend of architecture and nature. The name originates from a legend where an eagle was seen circling the main church's dome during its opening ceremony. The complex comprises several significant structures, including the St. Gregory Church (11th century), St. Astvatsatsin Church (1281), St. Stepanos Church (1244), a 13th-century chapel, a refectory (1248), and the tombs of the Bagratid dynasty. The refectory, designed by architect Minas, is considered a masterpiece of Armenian architecture. The monastery was a prominent spiritual and cultural center in medieval Armenia, housing around 300 monks. Visitors can explore the intricate carvings, vaulted arches, and unique architectural details of the monastery.
