Kecharis Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Treasure

Kecharis Monastery, located in the popular ski resort town of Tsaghkadzor, stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and architectural history. Founded in the 11th century by the Pahlavuni princes, the monastery evolved into a prominent spiritual and educational hub during the medieval period. The complex comprises four churches, two chapels, and a cemetery adorned with intricately carved khachkars from the 12th and 13th centuries. The main temple, the Church of Saint Grigor Lusavorich (the Illuminator), was erected in 1013 by Grigor Magistros Pahlavuni. This domed hall-type church exemplifies the architectural style of Armenia's developed feudal period. The interior is divided into three spaces, with a cupola resting on spherical pendentives. The cupola, destroyed in a 1927 earthquake, was reconstructed in 2000. South of the main church stands the smaller Church of Surb Nshan, built in the 11th century and restored in 1223. The Katoghike Church, commissioned by Prince Vasak Khaghbakian, was constructed between 1203 and 1214 and features a cross-in-square layout. The Church of the Holy Resurrection, built in 1220, is located a short distance from the main buildings and served as the burial place for abbots of the monastery. Throughout its history, Kecharis Monastery has faced numerous challenges, including destruction by Mongol-Tatars in the 13th century and an earthquake in 1927. However, it has been consistently restored, with major efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries bringing it back to its former glory. Today, Kecharis is not only a popular tourist destination but also an active spiritual center for the Armenian Apostolic Church.
