Discover more about Republic Square

Republic Square, also known as Hraparak, stands as the vibrant heart of Yerevan, Armenia. Designed by architect Alexander Tamanian, its construction began in 1926 and continued until 1958, embodying a blend of national style and global architectural influences. For many decades, it was named Lenin Square, reflecting Armenia's Soviet past until 1991. The square is surrounded by five prominent buildings, each constructed from pink and yellow tuff stones, a volcanic rock that gives Yerevan its signature rose-hued glow. These include the Government House with its iconic clock tower, the National Gallery and History Museum, the Central Post Office, the Armenia Marriott Hotel, and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. The singing fountains, a major attraction, perform nightly from late spring to mid-fall. The water streams dance to classical, jazz, pop, and rock music, creating a captivating spectacle. The fountains typically operate from 9 PM to 11 PM, but starting May 28, the water show will begin at 9 PM and last until 11 PM. During the Soviet era, a statue of Lenin stood in the square but was removed in 1991 after Armenia gained independence. Today, Republic Square is a hub of activity, hosting concerts, celebrations, and everyday life. The square also features a drinking fountain called “Yot Ahpyur” (Seven Springs), built in 1965, providing fresh water to visitors.
