Saghmosavank Monastery, meaning "Monastery of Psalms," is a captivating 13th-century Armenian Apostolic complex located in the Aragatsotn Province. The monastery is built on the edge of the precipitous Kasakh River gorge, its silhouette rising sharply against the backdrop of the mountains crowned by Mount Aragats. According to legend, the monastery's origins trace back to the 4th century when St. Gregory the Illuminator supposedly built a church on this site and taught psalms to clergymen. However, historical records only mention Saghmosavank at the end of the 12th century. The main church, St. Sion, was constructed in 1215 by Prince Vache Vachutyan. The complex also includes the Church of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), a gavit (courtyard), and a repository of manuscripts. The monastery was a prominent spiritual, cultural, and educational center during the Middle Ages. Its library housed a rich collection of manuscripts, and the complex was known for its exceptional acoustics, where spiritual chants and psalms resonated. The school at Saghmosavank operated until the end of the 17th century. In 1255, Prince Kurd Vachutyan and his wife built the Saint Astvatsatsin church-library to commemorate their late daughter. The monastery suffered damage during the 1988 earthquake, but reconstruction efforts have restored its beauty and significance. Today, Saghmosavank stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious heritage and architectural legacy, offering visitors a serene and spiritually enriching experience.
