Saint Grigor Church, also known as Aruchavank, stands in the village of Aruch as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and architectural heritage. Constructed between 662 and 666 AD under the patronage of Prince Grigor Mamikonian and his wife Heghine, the church is one of the most significant examples of early Christian Armenian architecture. The church was consecrated by Catholicos Anastas I Akoretsi.Architecturally, Saint Grigor is a domed hall-type church, the largest of its kind from the early medieval period. While the dome is now ruined, the structure still impresses with its grandeur and the intricate details of its construction. The exterior features many large windows and 'Armenian niches'. The interior once boasted vibrant frescoes, with fragments still visible today. Notably, the remains of a 7-meter high mural of Jesus Christ can still be seen.Excavations around the church have revealed other historical treasures, including the ruins of Prince Grigor Mamikonian's palace and a 13th-century caravanserai. These discoveries highlight Aruch's importance as a cultural and administrative center during the Middle Ages. The Aruch Palace ruins, located near the cathedral, are similar in layout to the Catholicos Palace in Dvin.
