The waterfall is formed by the Chichkhan River, a tributary of the Pambak River, as it cascades down a 23-meter drop. The name 'Trchkan' translates to 'jumping' in Armenian, inspired by the sight of trout leaping upstream during spawning season. Locals sometimes call it 'Chran', which describes the sound of flowing water. The waterfall is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering a refreshing escape into nature. The surrounding area is known for its scenic beauty, with mountains and meadows lining the Chichkhan River. It's a great place for picnics and enjoying the outdoors. The area around Trchkan Waterfall is home to diverse plant, bird, and animal species, some of which are registered in the Red Book of Armenia. In 2008, Trchkan Waterfall was designated as a natural heritage site, and in 2011, it was included in the list of protected areas. This was partly due to the efforts of environmental activists who successfully prevented the construction of a hydroelectric power station that would have threatened the waterfall's existence.
