The Vishapakars, or dragon stones, are megalithic monuments found throughout the Armenian Highlands, including near Yelpin. These unique stones, dating back to the 2nd millennium BCE, are typically located near water sources such as springs, rivers, and artificial ponds. They are carved from a single stone and often feature the shapes of fish, serpents, bulls, or rams, reflecting a blend of mythology and ancient Armenian beliefs. The name "Vishap" itself is rooted in Armenian mythology, where it refers to a dragon or water spirit. In ancient times, these stones were likely used in rituals to protect water sources and ensure fertility. The stones are associated with the Armenian Pagan Goddess Astghik, the protector of love, fertility, and waters. According to legend, defeating a vishap would release water, reinforcing the belief in these stones as protectors of life-sustaining resources. Today, around 150 Vishapakar are known to exist, with about 90 of them located in Armenia. They stand as testaments to Armenia's rich cultural heritage and the enduring importance of water in the region's history.
