Discover more about Amberd fortress

Amberd Fortress, one of Armenia's most impressive medieval fortresses, is located on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats, approximately 50 km from Yerevan. Rising 2,300 meters above sea level, the fortress commands a strategic position at the intersection of the Arkashen and Amberd rivers. The name 'Amberd,' meaning 'fortress in the clouds,' perfectly captures its often mist-shrouded location.Construction of Amberd began in the 7th century by the Kamsarakan princes. In the 10th century, it became the residence of the Pahlavuni family, further fortifying its defenses. Vahram Pahlavuni ordered the construction of the Vahramashen Church in 1026. Throughout its history, Amberd faced numerous invasions, including those by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century and the Mongols in the 13th century, leading to periods of destruction and reconstruction. The fortress lost its strategic importance in the 14th century.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of the fortress, including the castle walls, a three-story palace, a bathhouse with its advanced heating system, and the Vahramashen Church. Excavations have revealed underground passageways and a sophisticated water supply system. The fortress offers panoramic views of the surrounding canyons and the slopes of Mount Aragats.
